LORETTO, Pa. – The Saint Francis U men’s volleyball team wrapped up its 30th varsity season with a win over Rutgers-Newark, 25-16, 25-22, 25-19, on senior day.
The Red Flash defense (12-15, 7-7) notched 24 blocks on the afternoon and forced the Scarlet Raiders (4-21, 0-14) to a miserable .023 team hitting percentage.
“It was a great way to end the season on a winning note,” SFU head coach Mike Rumbaugh said. “I am going to miss Nick and Adam and I sincerely thank for them for their contributions to the program over the past four seasons.”
Both teams played even early in the first set until SFU went on an 8-0 run to make the score 17-8, Lucas Behringer had two aces during the span. The Red Flash went on another late 4-0 run highlighted by a block from Behringer and Adam Roche. SFU took the first set after a service error from Rutgers-Newark.
Rutgers-Newark took a lead in the beginning of the second set, but SFU was able to spark a 3-0 run to tie the frame at eight. With the stanza tied at 22, the Flash scored three straight points and Adam Barba finished the set off with an ace.
Saint Francis held an early lead in the third set, but the Scarlet Raiders were able to stay with the Flash. SFU started to pull away late as they took a five point lead at 23-18 after a kill from Mike Marshman. The Red Flash capped off the afternoon with a block from Marshman and Behringer.
Adam Barba led SFU in the kills department with 11. Adam Roche posted eight blocks, while Nick Bancroft added seven digs in their SFU finales. Lucas Behringer finished with five kills and three service aces.
SFU concludes the 2013 season with a 12-15 record and an even 7-7 mark in conference play.
