NEWARK, NJ—Adam Gustafson had 14 kills and five service aces leading visiting NJIT past Rutgers-Newark, 3-1, Wednesday night in EIVA men's volleyball conference action at The Golden Dome.
The win raised the Highlanders to an even 5-5 on the season and 1-2 in the EIVA while the Raiders fall to 4-4 overall, 1-3 in the conference. Both teams met on January 21 in the Golden Dome Invitational, with NJIT sweeping the Raiders, 3-0. NJIT will host Rutgers-Newark on April 11 at 7pm.
The Raiders took the first set, 25-23, before NJIT pulled even with a 25-11 win in the second frame as the team hit .524 (13k, 2e, 21a). The Highlanders then secured the match with a 25-18 and 25-23 wins in the next two sets.
Gustafson, the Highlanders senior captain, finished the match hitting .565 with 14 kills on 23 swings and just one error. Gustafson also posted a match-high five services and added five kills for NJIT.
In addition to Gustafson's 14 kills, the Highlanders also got double-figure kill totals from freshman TJ Jurko. Middle Kevin Van Oss added eight kills and a match-high eight total blocks (five assists, three solo).
Highlander setter Matthew Lui piled up 33 assists while adding six digs and six total blocks (five assists and one solo). Libero Brady Smith dug-up a team-high seven digs followed by freshman Chris Kaepernick (6) and Lui (6).
Rutgers-Newark had three players reach double-digit kill totals led by Austin Pappas's 16 kills followed by Marcin Midura (12) and Grant Metheny (11).
Manuel Felipez notched a match-high 41 assists for the home team while Zack Chambers posted a match-high nine digs. Grant and Midura each recorded six digs for the Raiders.
