Saint Francis University Signs Six Recruits For
2010-11
LORETTO, Pa. (June 23, 2010) – Saint Francis
University head men’s volleyball coach Michael Rumbaugh
formally announced that six players have signed national letters of
intent to continue to their academic and athletic careers at Saint
Francis in 2010-11.
Adam Barba (Meadville, Pa./Meadville), John Beck (Havre de Grace,
Md./Havre de Grace), Lucas Behringer (Indianapolis,
Ind./Cathedral), Michael Krepp (Mars, Pa./North Allegheny), Logan
Patterson (Derry, Pa./Derry Area), and Colin Sherwin (Greensburg,
Pa./Greater Latrobe), have all signed on to become the newest
members of the Red Flash men’s
volleyball team as members of the University’s Class of
2014.
“Considering the size and talent of last year’s
graduating class, we needed to bring another large class in to work
hard over the next four years and develop as a group,” said
Rumbaugh. “Our goal is that this class will mesh like
the last one and help put us back at the
top of the EIVA.”
Adam Barba is another product of the Tool City club program, and
has already played together with several of his new teammates: Adam
Roche (Cochranton, Pa./Cochranton), Kyle Beatty (Meadville,
Pa./Saegertown), and Nick Bancroft (Centerville,
Pa./Maplewood). The 6-6 outside hitter lettered four years
each in basketball and volleyball, and was named
Second-Team All-District in 2009, as well as 40 Finest All-State
that same year.
“Barba is a big outside hitter that comes from an area where
he is used to hard work and competing at a high level,” said
Rumbaugh. “He will adjust well because of the fact he
has chemistry with some of the guys already.”
John Beck is a 6-6 outside hitter that earned four varsity letters
in volleyball and one in tennis. Beck was a four-time
All-County Selection and a two-time MVP at Havre de Grace, where he
registered 493 kills, 166 aces, and 43 solo blocks.
“Beck is a young talent, but he still needs to refine his
game,” said Rumbaugh. “He hasn’t really
seen the competition that some of the other incoming players have,
so it might take him a bit of time to catch up to the speed of the
game, but he will most definitely grow into
a very good player.”
Lucas Behringer is a 6-1 outside hitter from Cathedral High School,
a program that was nationally ranked in 2010. Despite his
short stature, Behringer boasts an impressive vertical leap and was
a member of state championship teams in 2008 and 2010. He was
named to the All-State team while a member of the Fighting Irish,
as well as the 2010 All-Tournament
team, and was also an Academic All-State selection.
“Behringer is a smaller outside hitter with strong ball
handling skills,” said Rumbaugh. “He will be able
to control the tempo and speed of the match with his defense and
passing.”
Michael Krepp is a 6-0 left-handed setter from the successful North
Allegheny program, joining fellow Red Flash teammates John Skarupa
(Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) and John Wappler (Pittsburgh,
Pa./North Allegheny) as Tiger alumni. Krepp was a member of
Tigers
teams that won four consecutive WPIAL championships between 2007
and 2010, and was twice named First-Team All-WPIAL for Class AAA
(2009-2010). Not just a gifted setter, Krepp led his team in
blocks in both his junior and senior seasons.
“Krepp is special because he is used to running the offense
we like to run here,” said Rumbaugh. “He already
has the mindset necessary to compete at this level; we just need to
get him up to speed. Also, as a left-handed setter, he really
becomes a weapon for us at the net.”
Logan Patterson is a 6-6 outside hitter from Derry Area High
School, where he earned four letters in golf, three in volleyball,
and one in hockey. Despite playing volleyball for only the
past few years, Patterson is described as a physical presence near
the net, and was
named First-Team All-Section, First-Team All-WPIAL, and All-State
with the Trojans.
“Patterson may be the most athletic member of this
year’s recruiting class,” said Rumbaugh.
“Because he’s only played volleyball for the past few
years, there is still really great potential
for him to improve and become a great player in this
conference.”
Colin Sherwin is a 6-3 left-handed opposite that comes to the Red
Flash from Greater Latrobe High School, where he earned letters in
volleyball, soccer, and basketball. Sherwin has been a force
on the club circuit, playing on the Pitt Elite and United Club
teams, as well as playing for the 2009 Ohio Valley Region USA
National Team and 2010 Pittsburgh Volleyball Open Team. In
high school, Sherwin is a three-time selection to the First-Team
All-WPIAL Class AAA team, and was named to the PIAA Finest 40 and
All-State Tournament teams.
“Sherwin is another lefty than can jump through the
roof,” said Rumbaugh. “One of the best things
about him is how smart he is; he really learned how to pace himself
by using big swings when necessary, but also using smaller swings
to save his strength for later. Also, his quickness in the
back row will be an asset for us.”
