Loyola Roughs Up #15 Red Flash In Straight Sets
CHICAGO, Ill. (Jan. 29, 2010) - The #15 Red Flash men's
volleyball team had a five-match winning streak snapped on Friday,
as it fell to the Loyola-Chicago Ramblers 3-0 (26-30, 21-30, 21-30)
in straight sets.
The loss drops the Red Flash to 6-2 overall, with an 0-1 record in
EIVA Tait play and an 1-2 record in road matches in 2010. The
Ramblers improve to 5-0 in 2010 and a 6-0 record all-time against
Saint Francis.
The high-powered attack of the Ramblers was too much for the
frontcourt of the Red Flash, who recorded just three total blocks
in three sets. The Ramblers, in comparison, recorded 11
blocks, including a match-high of four by Mike Hutz.
"We took a shellacking, plain and simple," said head coach Mike
Rumbaugh. "They let it all hang out and didn't worry about
making mistakes, and that made us tentative."
"When we got tentative, we started making mistakes and that hurt
us."
The first set was the most competitive for the Red Flash, as
they battled back and forth with the Ramblers for the lead for most
of the game. Jordan Varee (Conneautville, Pa./Conneaut
Valley) recorded a set-high eight kills in the first game, giving
his team a 6-5 lead at one point and punctuating their largest lead
of the set with a kill to make the score 10-7.
Loyola would return fire, though, eventually taking a 14-13 lead on
a Matt Adler/Domenic Dewaele block and adding a Mike Morice service
ace afterwards. The Flash would tie it at 16 but would never
again see the lead as the Ramblers went on a 4-0 run to make it
20-16. Varee would add four more kills, but it would not be
enough as Loyola took set one 30-26 on a Kris Berzins kill.
The second set also began with an encouraging Red Flash start, with
Saint Francis building a 4-2 lead on a Varee service ace.
They would extend that lead to as many points as three, going up
7-4 on another Varee kill. From there, though, the Ramblers
took control. They would tie the score at 10-10 on a
Morice/Berzins block and go on to outscore the Red Flash 20-11 the
rest of the way out for the 30-21 win.
Now oozing with confidence, the Ramblers dropped the other shoe in
the third set, opening on a dominant 10-3 run. The lead would
be as high as ten, and the Red Flash never got closer than 11-5 as
the Ramblers rolled to another 30-21 win.
Saint Francis was led in kills by Varee, who had a match-high 18 to
go along with a .333 hitting percentage and seven digs, which tied
for a team-high with Seth Katich (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox
Chapel). Varee also had two aces. Nick Rivett
(Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) would also reach double figures in
kills with 13. Ryan Williams (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) had 44
assists.
