Balanced Effort Gives Red Flash Win In 2010 Season
Opener Against NYU, 3-0
LORETTO, Pa. (Jan. 12, 2010 - A balanced effort,
replete with contributions from across the line-up, made the
difference )as the Red Flash men's volleyball team opened their
2010 season with a 3-0 (30-20, 30-26, 30-22) victory over the New
York University Violets on Tuesday in Loretto.
The Flash are 1-0 overall, while the Violets fall to 0-1.
Despite a pair of record-breaking hitters on the outside in Jordan
Varee (Conneautville, Pa./Conneaut Valley) and Nick Rivett
(Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel), the Red Flash did a nice job of
spreading the ball around the frontcourt, focusing on attacking the
middle of the Violets' line. Varee and Rivett ended up with
just eight kills apiece, but teammates Alex Fortney (York,
Pa./Central York) and Pete Freyer (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park)
ended up with seven and six kills, respectively.
"One of our goals this year is to run the middles more, and to do
that we need to pass better than we passed tonight," said
Rumbaugh. "But Ryan [Williams] did a nice job of finding the
middles off the passes he was given."
Ryan Williams (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour), making his first start at
setter after the graduation of current Red Flash assistant coach
and assists-record holder Shane Conley, finished with 26 assists,
four digs, and three blocks.
The first set ran neck-and-neck early on, but the Red Flash used a
7-3 in the middle of the set to go up 17-11. The Violets
would get as close as 19-16 before the Flash closed on an 11-4 run,
capped by a thunderous kill by Alex Fortney.
NYU held tighter in the second set, never letting the Flash get
further than four points away. With the Red Flash up 20-16
midway through the match, the Violets battled back to tie the score
at 20. The teams exchanged points until the score was 24-24,
but the Red Flash closed on a 6-2 run to seal the second set.
The Flash salted away the contest in the third set; after the
Violets started out 5-4, the Flash would lead the rest of the way
out for the victory.
"It's nice to open up the season on a winning note," said
Rumbaugh. "It's also easier to teach and adjust things after
a win. We have some work to do before the weekend."
