Freshman Pat Schwagler had an impressive home debut, recording
22 kills and hitting .576, to help lead the Princeton men's
volleyball team to a 3-2 comeback victory over NYU Tuesday
night.
Schwagler led a three-headed offensive machine for Princeton, which
rallied from a 2-1 deficit with dominant performances in the final
two sets. Schwagler, along with junior Vincent Tuminelli and senior
Carl Hamming, recorded 60 of Princeton's 71 kills against the
Violets. Both Tuminelli and Hamming had 19 kills, and both chipped
in with double-digit digs.
"I was really proud of the guys for how they turned up the
intensity in sets four and five," head coach Sam Shwiesky said.
"The guys played with a lot of fire and energy to come back and win
the five-set match."
In his first start at home, sophomore Scott Liljestrom paced the
offense with 64 assists and helped the team hit .362 for the match.
Freshman Greg Wilson, making his first start, recorded four kills
on four swings and added seven blocks. Senior Jeff McCown led the
team with nine blocks and added two service aces.
After winning the opener 30-22, Princeton suffered losses of 33-31
and 30-28 in the next two sets. A renewed defensive effort and
strong serving ignited a major push in the final two sets, which
Princeton won 30-11 and 15-7. In the final two sets, NYU hit -.167
and -.045 and never held more than a 1-0 lead.
