Volleyball Claims First Win Of Season, Shweisky Era

Vincent Tuminelli led Princeton with 15 kills in a 3-0 win at NJIT.

A match-high 15 kills from junior Vincent Tuminelli and 51 assists from sophomore setter Scott Liljestrom helped the Princeton men's volleyball team to a 3-0 win at NJIT Friday night. The win is Princeton's first in the 2010 season and the first for new head coach Sam Shweisky, who replaced the retired Glenn Nelson in the offseason.

While the offense was balanced for Princeton, it was a strong defensive effort that keyed the Tigers' first victory of the season. Princeton limited the Highlanders to a .174 attack percentage and recorded a 39-26 edge in digs. Manny Sardinha, a walk-on who also plays men's soccer for the Tigers, led the way for Princeton with 11 digs.

"Give a lot of credit to Scott Liljestrom," Shweisky said. "We had a great hitting percentage, and he nearly got five guys in double digits. Vinny also had a great night. He's been really focused and helping keep the guys on a nice track. The guys were fired up. It was a fun match."

Princeton got double-digit kills from three players in the 30-24, 30-21, 30-26 victory. Tuminelli led all players with 15 kills and hit .609 for the match, while senior co-captain Carl Hamming recorded 13 kills and eight digs. Freshman Pat Schwagler recorded 11 kills and six digs, while both middles Jeff McCown and Michael Dye each had nine kills.

Princeton hit at least .250 in each set and had a match-best .590 percentage in the second game. The Tigers are now 1-3 and will make their home debut Tuesday night against NYU. Saturday's match with George Mason, which would have been the Tigers' EIVA opener, was postponed due to snow and will be made up at a later date.
