Harvard Celebrates St. Patrick's Day With Win Over MIT, 3-0

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.-Senior Brady Weissbourd recorded 21 kills on 27 swings to lead the Harvard men's volleyball team to a 3-0 win over neighboring MIT in front of an enthusiastic St. Patrick's Day crowd Tuesday night at the Malkin Athletic Center.

Weissbourd hit .667 to lead the Crimson (8-6) to a .390 hitting percentage. Harvard dominated the first two sets before rallying in the third to win by scores of 30-23, 30-17 and 30-26, handing the Engineers (22-11) just their second loss in the last 19 matches.

Harvard won for the sixth time in its last eight contests, behind 38 assists from junior Gil Weintraub and 11 kills and five digs from junior Erik Kuld. Senior Jeff Nathan logged a match-high six digs.

David Thomas led MIT with 12 kills, while Tim Lee had 32 assists and four digs.

The Crimson got off to a great start in the opening set, pulling out to a 7-3 lead on a 3-0 run sparked by a kill by sophomore Shaun Mansour. Harvard continued to expand the lead, building it to 13-7 on consecutive blocks by the duo of Weissbourd and junior Soren Rosier.

The margin grew as large as seven points, but the Engineers ran off three straight points, culminating in a Lee block to make it 19-16, Harvard. A Rosier kill halted the run, and the Crimson cruised from there, winning by seven. Weissbourd had six kills and an ace in the set, while Kuld had four kills and two digs.

In the second set, Harvard once again took control quickly, winning four of the first five points, and later ran off four straight points for an 11-4 edge. The lead reached double figures when a Weintraub ace made it 17-7.

The Set 2 lead peaked at 28-15, when sophomore Lubomir Malo notched a kill down the left side and Rosier pounded down an MIT overpass on the next play. The Crimson improved on its .429 Set 1 hitting percentage with a .440 mark in the second frame. Kuld and Weissbourd had four kills each in the set, while Weissbourd notched three aces.

MIT saved its best start for the third set, taking its first lead of the match on the opening point of the set and going up 7-3 on a kill by Thomas. Weissbourd tried to turn things around with a kill on the next play, but the Engineers kept up their strong play, forcing a Harvard timeout when Thomas blocked down a Harvard attack for a 12-6 lead.

Kuld registered a kill on the first point after the timeout, and the Crimson inched back into contention from there, tying the score at 19-19 on a Weissbourd kill off an overpass and grabbing the lead for the first time in the set on the ensuing serve, when Weintraub rocketed an ace off the arms of Eric Reuland.

Neither team built a lead of more than one point until a Weissbourd ace, his fifth, made it 25-23. The Engineers could never tie the match again and hit the net with an attack on match point as the Crimson held on for a four-point win.
