Harvard Takes Weekend Sweep With 3-1 Win Over NJIT
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - After taking the first two sets but
dropping the third, the Harvard men's volleyball team responded
with a dominating performance in the fourth to down NJIT, 3-1,
Saturday afternoon at the Malkin Athletic Center to complete a
weekend sweep. Harvard defeated the Highlanders, 30-26,
30-26, 25-30, 30-18, to improve to 5-5 on the season after
defeating Rutgers-Newark Friday night.
Senior Brady Weissbourd led the way for the Crimson, posting a
double-double with 27 kills, 10 digs, five blocks and four service
aces. Erik Kuld also had a strong day, as the junior had a
double-double with 16 kills and 11 digs. Junior Gil Weintraub
contributed 59 assists, senior Jeff Nathan had 10 digs, and junior
Soren Rosier posted five blocks. Glen DeMagalhaes had a team-high
16 kills for NJIT (3-10).
Neither team was able to take control early in the first set, as
NJIT tied it up seven different times, the last at 9-9 on a kill by
Steve Sylvester. Weissbourd then slammed home two kills, blocked a
Highlander attack with sophomore Shaun Mansour, and pounded home
two straight service aces to put Harvard up, 14-10. After a NJIT
timeout, the Crimson would extend the lead to six at 21-15 on a
service ace by Rosier. The Crimson called a timeout after NJIT
whittled the lead down to two, 22-20, and eventually tied it at
24-all. A Crimson attack error got NJIT to one at 27-26, but kills
by Weissbourd and Rosier were followed by a Kuld service ace for
the win in the first set, 30-26.
Harvard found itself down early in the second set, as a Crimson
attack error made it 9-5 NJIT. A kill by freshman Matt Jones, one
of his 13 on the day, got the Crimson to within two at 12-10, but
NJIT would get the lead back up to four at 18-14 on a kill by
Charles Bell. Harvard was able to turn it around at that point, as
three straight points forced NJIT to call a timeout up 18-17.
Harvard grabbed its first lead of the set, 19-18, after two
straight NJIT attack errors. Harvard then expanded the lead to
three at 26-23, forcing NJIT to call another timeout. Three kills
within a four-serve span got NJIT to one at 27-26, but three
straight NJIT errors gave Harvard the second set win, 30-26.
Like the second set, head coach Brian Baise's squad again found
itself down early in the third, as the Highlanders slowly built
their lead up to five at 12-7. Harvard was able to get the lead
down to two at 20-18 on a kill by Jones, but three straight
Highlander points forced Harvard to call a timeout. After being
down, 27-19, Harvard scored three straight points, the latter on a
block by Weintraub and Mansour, but after a NJIT timeout, the
Highlanders were able to put Harvard away, 30-25.
After an early 3-3 tie to begin the fourth set, the Crimson began
to take control, building a five-point lead at 11-6 on a Kuld kill,
and then extending it to six on a Weissbourd service ace to make it
16-10. NJIT called a timeout, but the Crimson would continue to
come at the Highlanders, as Kuld slammed home three kills and
assisted on a block of an NJIT attack, all within a five-serve
span, to put Harvard up by nine, 22-13. Weissbourd slammed home
four kills after that as Harvard extended its lead to double
digits, 28-17. A match-point kill by Kuld finished the deal and
gave Harvard a 30-18 win.
