NYU Rallies to Top Harvard, 3-2
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Crimson took an
early 2-0 lead, but NYU rallied to take the next three games and
defeat the Harvard men's volleyball team, 3-2, Friday night at the
Malkin Athletic Center. Harvard took the first games, 30-26 and
30-28, but the Violets defeated the Crimson in games three and four
by identical 30-22 scores before winning the fifth and deciding
set, 15-11.
Harvard (1-2, 0-1 Hay Division) was led by freshman Matt Jones and
senior co-captain Brady Weissbourd, who each tallied 14 kills on
the night, while Weissbourd also had a team-high 11 blocks. Junior
co-captain Gil Weintraub contributed 50 assists, while junior Erik
Kuld had a team-high nine digs. NYU (2-8, 1-0) was led by Devin
Zolnowski, who totaled 21 kills, and Francis Hodgson, who had a
match-high 12 blocks. Jay Hayes had a match-high 11 digs for the
Violets.
Harvard jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first game, and extended it
to 10-4 as Jones denied a Michael Ferragonio attack. NYU was unable
to get any closer than three throughout the middle part of the
match, as Harvard had an answer for every NYU point. Freshman
Nikola Ivica pounded home a kill and followed it up with a service
ace to give the Crimson a 22-16 lead. NYU finally got to within
two, 26-24 on a Patrick Dodd service ace, but with Harvard up,
29-26, Weissbourd threw down a kill to give the Crimson the first
match.
Harvard again jumped out on top in the second game, building an
early 5-1 lead. NYU would slowly chip away at the Crimson advantage
and tied it up at 8-8 on a Hodgson block. Weintraub's service ace
got the Crimson ahead, 13-10, and was up 16-14, but the Violets
would take the next seven points to go up, 21-16, including a
Ferragonio kill that followed a spectacular save by Weintraub on
the previous NYU attack. A Jones kill stopped the NYU rally, as the
Crimson got the deficit down to one, 23-22, before tying it at
26-26. Head coach Brian Baise called a timeout after NYU went up,
28-26, but Ivica would score two kills in a row and an attack error
by the Violets would give Harvard the game, 30-28.
NYU grabbed an early, 4-1 lead, in the third game, but Harvard was
able to get within one, 8-7, on a kill by Kuld. The Crimson,
though, would call another timeout after NYU went up, 15-9. Harvard
took four of the game's next five points after that break, getting
to within three at 16-13 on a Jones kill, but NYU would go on a 6-1
run to extend the lead to eight. Weissbourd's block got the Crimson
to within five at 25-20, but NYU would take five of the game's next
seven points to win.
NYU would build another early three-point lead in the fourth game,
but the Crimson would not quit, to within one at 6-5 and to within
three at 11-8. The Violets took a commanding lead with an 8-1 run
to go up, 19-9. NYU build a double-digit lead at 21-11, as the
Crimson would get no closer than seven the rest of the way.
The Crimson would not go down early in the fifth match, getting to
within one at 5-4 and then again at 8-7. After NYU called a timeout
and took the next two points, Weissbourd would knock home a kill to
get the Crimson within two at 10-8. The Crimson would get no closer
and NYU would take the match on a Ferragonio kill for the 15th
point of the game.
