Senior records 14 blocks to tie Steinfurth's school
record
FAIRFAX, Va. (February 27, 2009) - Senior middle blocker Brandon
McLaughlin tied Matt Steinfurth's rally-scoring era single-match
total blocks record with 14 blocks on Friday evening against EIVA
Tait Division rival Saint Francis (Pa.). Despite McLaughlin's
efforts, the Patriots were unable to overcome the Red Flash,
falling by a final score of 3-1 at the Field House.
McLaughlin's two blocks and 12 block assists ties Steinfurth's
record set during the 2006 season. The Huntington Beach, Calif.
native's previous career high was 11, set against IPFW last
season.
Mason fell behind early, dropping the first set by a final score of
30-24. Aside from a pair of ties, the Patriots trailed for the
entire opening set.
George Mason bounced back in the second set, using an 8-0 spurt to
turn a tie game into a 23-15 advantage on its way to a 30-19 win.
Included in the decisive run were three consecutive service aces by
senior Kyle Gramit. Gramit finished with six aces in the match.
After hitting .406 in the second set victory, the Patriot attack
was unable to continue its hot hitting. Mason hit .237 in the third
set and .025 in the fourth set, dropping both by final scores of
31-29.
Junior Ben Nichols led the Patriots with 19 kills. Junior Luke
Maloney chipped in 16 and Gramit added 13. Sophomore setter Brandon
Joyner recorded a match-high 50 assists. Sophomore Eric Lucas led
all players with 12 digs.
Junior Jordan Varee nearly finished with a double-double for the
Red Flash. Varee finished with 18 kills, nine digs and two blocks
in the match.
Mason's record drops to 6-4 overall and 2-2 in EIVA Tait Division
matches. Saint Francis (Pa.) improves to 8-8 overall and 4-3 in
conference play.
