Mason Beats No. 13 Ball State, 3-0
Patriots hit .380 in the three-game sweep
MUNCIE, Ind. (February 5, 2009) - After opening the season with
three consecutive home matches, the George Mason men's volleyball
team faced its first road test of the season on Thursday evening at
Worthen Arena in Muncie, Ind. The Patriots excelled in their first
match away from Fairfax, downing No. 13 Ball State by a final score
of 3-0 (30-25, 30-26, 30-24).
George Mason hit .380 as a team in the match to improve its record
to 3-1 on the season. All three of the Patriots' wins this season
have come by way of the sweep. Mason's lone loss of the year was on
Jan. 23 against Loyola Chicago. Ball State dropped to 1-4 with the
loss.
Senior Kyle Gramit and junior Ben Nichols paced the Patriot attack
with 14 and 10 kills, respectively. Junior setter Ryan Kwiatkowski
dished out 40 assists in the win. Mason's defense was led by senior
middle blocker Brandon McLaughlin, who totaled seven blocks.
Todd Chamberlain led the Cardinals with 12 kills, while J.D.
Gasparovic added 10 on .562 hitting. Billy Ebel finished with nine
digs for Ball State.
