Season Outlook
Senior outside hitter Jon Daley, senior libero R.J. Roth
and junior opposite Chris Holden lead the East Stroudsburg
University men's volleyball program into the 2009 season under the
direction of fourth-year head coach Dustin Wood.
Daley and sophomore outside hitter Eli Porr, both
starters in 2007, return to the Warriors after receiving medical
redshirts last year. Daley is a two-time All-EIVA selection at
middle hitter and is moving outside for his senior year to give him
more opportunities to swing on the offensive side of the net.
Defensively, Daley is tied for second in school history with 316
career blocks. He also ranks second in aces and fourth in kills,
and should go over the 1,000 kill mark for his career early this
season.
Porr is a strong passer and defender who started most of his
freshman year in 2007, when he was second on the team in digs.
Sophomore Don Hanna started 15 matches last year
and classmate Michael Semeraro will also
contribute on the outside.
Holden led ESU with 3.8 kills per game and had a team-high in kills
in 17 of 19 matches last season after joining the program from
SUNY-New Paltz, where he was his league's player of the year as a
freshman. Both Holden and Daley are 6-7 and can touch nearly 12
feet, giving the Warriors two of the top athletes in the EIVA.
Seniors Kyle Duffy and Jeff Quinn
will hold down the middle hitter spot for ESU. Duffy started there
last year and is a strong blocker, while Quinn is transitioning
from opposite where he contributed in his first three years in the
program. Freshman Dante McCoy will see time as a
blocking specialist.
Roth enters his senior year as a four-year starter and already
holds the school record with 731 career digs. He led the NCAA in
digs as a freshman, led the EIVA and was second in the nation as a
sophomore, and ranked second in the EIVA last season. Sophomore
Drew Dvorsky will be utilized as a defensive sub
in the back row.
At setter, three players entered the preseason with a chance to
earn the starting position. Freshman Levi Kauffman
won the job after an All-State high school career at Red Lion and
has made strides adapting to the college offense. Sophomore
Josh Hobson saw significant action at setter as a
freshman and knows ESU's offensive and defensive systems. Freshman
Brent Hurst has also shown promise and may
contribute this season.
