Mason Defeats Perennial Powers in Preview to the
Final Four Tournament
Patriots earn a 3-0 mark against three 2007 NCAA
Tournament teams
BUFFALO, N.Y. (November 12, 2007) - George Mason
put on an impressive display at the 15th Annual NCAA Men's
Volleyball Preview to the Final Four Tournament, earning a 3-0 mark
against three national powerhouse programs. Each of the schools
that the Patriots defeated over the weekend qualified for the 2007
NCAA Men's Volleyball Championships.
Mason played its first match of the tournament on Saturday against
UC Irvine, sweeping the Anteaters in three games (30-24, 34-32,
30-26). UC Irvine is coming off a season in which the team captured
its first national title, recording the best season in school
history with a 29-5 overall record.
In its second match of the day on Saturday, George Mason took on
last year's national runner-up, the IPFW Mastodons, who lost to UC
Irvine in four games in last year's National Championship match.
IPFW took a game from the Patriots but that was all as Mason won
the match 3-1 (30-21, 30-25, 23-30, 30-27) to finish a remarkable
first day of action at the tournament.
On Sunday, the Patriots played their final match of the
tournament, squaring off against EIVA rival Penn State, the
defending conference champion and a semifinalist in last year's
NCAA Championships. Mason fell behind in a match for the first time
in the tournament, facing a 2-1 deficit after three games, but
rallied to win in five (30-20, 29-31, 17-30, 30-26, 15-12) to
finish the tournament with a perfect 3-0 record.
With high hopes following the team's tournament title at the 15th
Annual NCAA Men's Volleyball Preview to the Final Four Tournament,
the Patriots begin their 2008 regular season schedule with a match
on Tuesday, Jan. 15 at 7:30 p.m. against the University of Puerto
Rico-Mayaguez at the George Mason Fieldhouse.
