George Mason came into DeGol Arena on Saturday night with the
intentions of getting redemption for an early season loss, but the
Patriots ran into a total team effort by the Saint Francis men's
volleyball team, which won a pivotal EIVA Tait Division match 3-1
in front of more than 500 fans.
Senior Marc Honore (San Fernando, Trinidad / Naparima) had his
third consecutive strong match with 21 kills on .643 hitting to go
with 2 aces and 6 blocks in a 30-22, 23-30, 30-24, 30-19 win.
The Red Flash improved to 10-6 overall and 4-2 in the EIVA Tait
with a pair of convincing wins this weekend. They moved from fifth
place in the standings all the way up to second with the crucial
wins. Saint Francis will seek revenge on Princeton, which defeated
the Red Flash 3-1 on Feb. 10 at DeGol Arena, with a 7 p.m. start on
Friday night. Head coach Mike Rumbaugh will be seeking his
100th career win in the match. Only three other coaches
in school history have reached the 100-win plateau - Dr. William
"Skip" Hughes (293 wins in men's basketball), Jenny Przekwas (133
wins in women's basketball), and Gary Evangelisto (126 wins in
men's volleyball).
While Honore scored 26.5 points on the night, he was joined by four
other teammates with double-digit points.
Freshman Jordan Varee (Meadville, Pa. / Conneaut Valley) had 13
kills, 2 assists, 4 digs and 5 blocks, senior Travis Fox
(Meadville, Pa. / Cochranton) added 11 kills on .588 hitting with 1
ace, 10 digs and 2 blocks, freshman Nick Rivett (Pittsburgh, Pa. /
Fox Chapel) had 12 kills, 5 digs and 1 block, and freshman Pete
Fryer (Buffalo, N.Y. / Orchard Park) contributed 8 kills on .429
hitting, 1 ace and 4 blocks. Sophomore setter Shane Conley
(Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Allegheny) dished out 52 assists in the
win.
Saint Francis got off to a good start with a 30-22 win in Game 1.
But the Patriots turned a 10-10 Game 2 deadlock into a 16-10 lead
with six straight points. Saint Francis pulled to within 23-21 on
an Honore kill. But Mason won four straight serves to put the game
out of reach at 27-21. Kyle Swanson clinched it at 30-23 with a
kill to make it a match.
The Patriots carried the momentum into Game 3 and had the Red Flash
on their heals with a 13-8 lead. A kill by Fryer and three straight
attack errors pulled Saint Francis within 13-12. Mason won two of
the next three serves to take a 15-13 lead, but the Red Flash made
a run from which the Patriots would never recover. SFU took a 16-15
lead and, after a 17-17 tie, would build that lead to 27-22 on
another kill by Honore. Fryer gave the Red Flash a two games to one
advantage with a kill on game point to end it at 30-24.
Mason held a brief 3-2 lead in Game 4, but the Red Flash took
control in front of the home crowd and held the lead the rest of
the way. Varee would give them a 13-8 lead with a kill, forcing the
Patriots into a timeout. Mason crawled back to within 18-17, but
Saint Francis responded with a 7-0 run to make it 25-17. Honore
clinched the match, and moved the Red Flash into second place, with
a kill to end it at 30-19.
