In Hall of Fame Morgan Classic Championship Match
In Consolation Action, UCSD Knocks Off Rutgers-Newark, 3-1
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., February
10, 2007 - Ball State University senior outside hitter Nick
Meyer (Cincinnati, Ohio) led all players with 19.5 points
on a match-high 15 kills to go along five blocks and one service
ace as the Cardinals downed Springfield College, 3-0 (30-25, 30-19,
30-24), in the championship match of the 2007 Volleyball Hall of
Fame Morgan Classic hosted by the Pride in Blake Arena.
For his efforts on the weekend, Meyer was named the tournament's
Most Outstanding Player (MOP). Joining Meyer on the All-Tournament
Team, from Ball State, was sophomore outside hitter Todd
Chamberlain (Louisville, Ky.) and sophomore middle hitter
Ryan Clarke (Ballwin, Mo.). Chamberlain had 13
kills and seven digs in the championship affair, followed by Clarke
with eight kills and four blocks.
SC junior All-American Eric Palumbo (Chili, N.Y.)
and freshman outside hitter AJ Nally (Rochester,
N.Y.) each garnered All-Tournament Team honors for the
Pride. Palumbo tallied a team-best 11 kills against the Cardinals
to add to his five digs. Nally led all players with 12 digs. The
Pride is now 8-5 overall on the season after its 1-1 Morgan Classic
weekend, whereas the Cardinals improve to 6-4 on the year.
Ball State had four different players contribute with double-figure
totals in points this evening. Meyer led the way with 19.5 points
and racked up a team-high 10 digs. Chamberlain added 13 points all
coming from his 13 kills. Sophomore middle hitter Matt
McCarthy (Wheaton, Ill.) recorded 11.5 points on eight
kills and a match-best seven blocks, followed by Clarke with his
10.5 total points.
SC sophomore All-American Andy Sipe (New Oxford,
Pa.) paced the Pride with a team-high six blocks in the
loss. The middle blocker also added five kills and one service ace
for 9.5 points. Junior setter Chris Shekell (Rochester,
N.Y.) compiled 20 assists against the Cardinals. SC will
next be in action at home against NJIT on Friday evening, February
16th in a 7:00 p.m. start.
UCSD 3, Rutgers-Newark 1:
University of California, San Diego senior setter
Brooks Dierdorff (Redlands, Calif.) tallied an
impressive 64 assists, eight blocks and four digs in being named to
the All-Tournament Team as the Tritons defeated the Rutgers-Newark
Scarlet Raiders, 3-1 (30-23, 30-28, 24-30, 32-30), this evening in
the consolation match of the Volleyball Hall of Fame Morgan
Classic.
Rutgers-Newark senior outside hitter Eric Honsberger
(Lancaster, N.Y.) earned All-Tournament Team honors with a
match-high 29 kills despite the loss. Honsberger racked up 29 kills
on 53 swings and just eight errors for a .396 hitting percentage.
The senior also totaled seven digs, four blocks and one service ace
for 32 points.
UCSD was paced by freshman middle blocker Frank Fritsch
(Los Gatos, Calif.) on the offensive end with 19 kills.
Freshman outside hitter Will Ehrman (Honolulu,
Hawaii) and freshman middle blocker Adrian Guthals
(Westlake Village, Calif.) totaled 15 kills apiece for the
Tritons, followed by junior middle blocker Stephen Shaw
(Westlake Village, Calif.) with 12. Guthals also totaled a
match-best nine blocks.
Scarlet Raider sophomore libero Rogelio Nodal (Kearny,
N.J.) led all players with 13 digs. Sophomore libero
Derek Wolfe (Orlando, Fla.) chipped in with 12
kills, and sophomore setter Mark Hulse (Evanston,
Ill.) registered 50 assists.
Rutgers-Newark falls to 2-7 overall on the season after the 0-2
weekend, and UCSD is now 4-7 overall after the 1-1 two-day
stretch.
