The Rutgers-Newark men's volleyball team prepares for another
year of success as they begin the 2006-2007 season. The
Scarlet Raiders have been one of the strongest programs in the east
for over 30 years and hope to continue their winning ways this
season.
Schedule
Rutgers-Newark has a tough road ahead of them as they play 12
matches against teams ranked in the final AVCA Division I/II poll
from the 2006 season. They also have 5 matches against teams
ranked in the final AVCA Division III poll.
Competition will begin on November 12th as the
Springfield College Pride visit the Golden Dome for a preseason
contest. The Raiders then travel to Buffalo, NY for the
"Preview to the Final Four". Closing out the autumn season at
this tournament has become a tradition that gives some of the
countries best volleyball teams a chance to compete in front of a
crowd that doesn't often get to see teams like USC, Ball State, and
George Mason as well as Rutgers-Newark, who will all be at this
year's tournament.
The regular season kicks off as the Raiders host 4 matches against
traditional Midwest power Lewis, last season's Division III #2 NYU,
and Steven's Institute of Technology who have competed in the
Division III Championship Tournament 3 of the past 4 seasons.
The Raiders close their home stand with an Alumni match on
Saturday, January 20th. We welcome all alumni and
friends to the events. Please contact the volleyball offices
for further information.
Rutgers will next travel to St. John Arena, site of this season's
NCAA Championship, to take on Ohio State on January
26th. The Raiders play at Mercyhurst before
opening EIVA league competition against East Stroudsburg in the
Dome.
Local rival NJIT is next on the schedule followed by the 2007
Volleyball Hall of Fame Classic at Springfield College. Last
season's #12 team Ball State will battle Rutgers for the right to
compete against either UC San Diego or Springfield College on
Saturday, February 10th.
Next it's back to league competition against East Stroudsburg,
Division III National Champion Juniata, and Princeton. The
Raiders then compete in their second tournament of the month, this
time hosting The Golden Dome Classic February 24th and
25th. Rutgers will face George Mason on Saturday and Juniata
on Sunday, their 4th and 5th consecutive EIVA
conference matches.
Rutgers will play 11 matches in the month of March, making the
stretch run very busy. Rematches will occur between the
Raiders and Ohio State, Princeton, and Lewis. Also scheduled
are Springfield, and two time defending MIVA Champion Loyola in
Chicago. St. Francis and National Runner-up Penn State will
do battle with the Raiders twice each along with a trip to Southern
California. USC and will host Rutgers on March
13th before Raider Mark Hulse takes the floor against
his brother Tom who plays for the Pepperdine Waves.
The EIVA conference schedule comes to a close when Rutgers travels
to George Mason on April 6th. One final road trip to the
Midwest will close out the regular season as the Raiders visit 2006
NCAA Final Four participant IPFW followed by Ball State. EIVA
post season play will begin on April 21st and the NCAA
championship will be played May 3rd and
5th.
Returners
A talented mix of youth and experience dawns the roster
for the Scarlet Raider men's volleyball team in 2007. Three
starters and six lettermen return to head the young squad.
Six freshmen and one junior transfer make up a strong incoming
class to round out the roster of 13.
Senior outside hitter and co-captain Eric Honsberger (Lancaster,
NY) will try to improve on an impressive junior season in which he
was honored by being voted second team all-EIVA. Co-captain
and Senior Clint Haugan (Ojai, CA) will make the switch to middle
blocker and close out the short list of upper classmen at
Rutgers.
Returning starting setter Mark Hulse (Evanston, IL) and libero
Derek Wolfe (Orlando, FL) lead a strong sophomore class.
Second year lettermen Rogelio Nodal (Kearny, NJ) and Kenny
Rienecker (Glendale, NY) saw limited action last season but are
hoping to step up their roles this season.
Incoming Players
Three freshmen outside hitters will add depth to the
Raider line up. Nate Stott (Clovis, CA), Nick Sims (Evanston,
IL), and Stefan Brown (Uniondale, NY) come to Rutgers after
successful prep careers.

contribute in the middle as first years. Freshman Peter
Kolinsky (Newington, CT)and Junior transfer Cory Hanson
(hometown)will add much needed depth at the setter position to the
Scarlet Raider roster.
