Werle Leads Juniata, NJIT Upends George Mason
GOLDEN DOME VOLLEYBALL CLASSIC
NEWARK, NJ (February 25, 2007) - MVP Matt
Werle (Meadville, PA/Meadville HS) posted 42 assists as he
quarterbacked Juniata to a 3-0 win over host Rutgers-Newark in The
Golden Dome Classic, and New Jersey Institute of Technology
registered a 3-1 upset of George Mason Sunday as a winter storm
arrived in the city.
Werle also had a match-high 10 digs, two aces, two solo blocks and
three assisted blocks while providing the sets that the Golden
Eagles (8-4, EIVA Tait 3-2) hit at a .376 clip. All-Classic
outside hitter Matt Fritz (Churchill, MD/John
Carroll) barely missed a double-double with a dozen kills, nine
digs and four assisted blocks and senior opposite Nate
Ocasio (Manchester, PA/Northeastern) also had 12
kills. All-Classic middle hitter Dan Powers
(Lancaster, PA/Manheim Township) notched eight kills on just 11
swings and added six assisted blocks in the EIVA Tait match.
The Scarlet Raiders (2-12, EIVA Tait 0-6) were paced by sophomore
All-Classic pick Kenny Rienecker (Glendale,
NY/Academy of American Studies) with 13 kills on .417
hitting. Freshman outside hitter Nate Stott
(Clovis, CA/Clovis) added nine kills and senior outside hitter
Eric Honsberger (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster Central)
had eight kills and six assisted blocks for 11 points. Senior
middle blocker Clinton Haugan (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff)
hit .667 with six kills and no errors on nine swings.
All-Classic outside hitter Leonardo Paludo (Balneario Camboriu, Brazil) hammered down 29 kills
and posted 13 digs to lift NJIT to a 30-24, 24-30, 30-23, 30-25
upset of George Mason. All-Classic setter Rodrigo
Correa (Balneario Camboriu, Brazil) bumped up 63 assists,
fueling the Highlanders (9-2) to a .312 hitting performance.
Sophomore outside hitter Amobi Armstrong (Corinth,
Gross Islet, St. Lucia) also had a double-double with 14 kills and
10 digs, while junior middle Greg Wagner
(Wilbraham, MA/Minnechaung Regional) hit .474 with 10 kills and
just one error on 19 swings. Freshman outside hitter
Charles Bell (Halwiwa, HI/Kahuku) posted 13 kills
for the Highlanders.
All-Classic outside hitter Kyle Gramit
(Naperville, IL/Naperville North) paced the Patriots (5-4) with 26
kills while junior outside hitter Mark Burik
(Glendale, NY/St. Francis Prep) added 19 kills and eight digs.
