Dayton Leads Balanced Lewis Past

Lewis 3, Rutgers-Newark 0 (30-24, 30-28, 30-22)
NEWARK, NJ (January 12, 2007) - Junior outside hitter
Jared Dayton (Laguna Hills, CA/Mission Viejo HS)
paced Lewis with 18 kills and two aces as the Flyers (2-0) spoiled
Rutgers-Newark's season opener, 3-0, in The Golden Dome. Game
scores were 30-24, 30-28, 30-22.
Senior outside hitter Eric Honsberger (Lancaster,
NY/Lancaster Central) hammered down a match-high 19 kills for
Rutgers-Newark, hitting .429 (19-4-35), but Lewis hit .441
(58-13-102) as a team to overwhelm the young Scarlet Raider
squad.
Dayton, who hit .467 (18-4-30), notched eight kills in game three
as the Flyers hit a sizzling .484 (17-2-31) to thwart any hopes of
a Scarlet Raider rally after Rutgers-Newark pushed the Flyers in
game two.
Led by freshman opposite Nate Stott (Clovis,
CA/Clovis), who had four of his six kills in the frame, the Raiders
had 14 kills with just one error in game two. But, Flyer
sophomore opposite David Kelnhofer (Waukesah,
WI/Catholic Memorial) recorded six of his 10 kills in the same game
as Lewis collected 25 kills on .513 hitting to gain a two-game
lead.
Sophomore outside hitter Drew Pickering
(Wauwatosa, WI/Wauwatosa West) had a dozen kills, hitting .455, and
added the Flyers' third kill of the match. Sophomore middle
blocker Billy Sahagian (Bartlett, IL/Bartlett) hit
had seven kills on 10 swings with just one error while sophomore
libero Nick Perakes (Orlando, FL/Cypress Creek)
bumped up 11 digs. Sophomore setter David
Taylor (St. Louis, MO/CBC) tallied 37 assists, four kills
and five blocking assists.
For the Raiders, sophomore setter Mark Hulse
(Evanston, IL/Evanston Township) had 33 assists, eight kills, an
ace, one solo block and two assisted blocks. Senior middle
Clinton Haugan (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff) collected six
kills, an ace and a solo block.
