Penn State Men's Volleyball Outlasts Ohio State,
3-2
Nittany Lions close out preseason with an exhibition win
COLUMBUS, Ohio, November 11, 2006 - The Penn State men's volleyball
team closed out its preseason exhibition schedule by outlasting
Ohio State in five games (26-30, 17-30, 30-15, 30-24, 16-14)
Saturday night in Columbus, Ohio.
"I thought we played well in the third and fourth games of the
match and we competed hard in the fifth game," said head coach Mark
Pavlik. "As the match went along, our offense started to flow and
we started to block some balls. It was a good match to wrap up this
training block."
Sophomore outside hitter Matt Anderson (West Seneca, N.Y.) led all
players with 17 kills on .500 hitting as sophomore middle hitter
Max Holt (Cincinnati, Ohio) contributed 15 kills and senior outside
hitter Alex Gutor (Kiev, Ukraine) posted 12 kills. Penn State
outhit Ohio State .319 to .298 for the match, including .316 to
.278 in the fifth game.
Junior setter Luke Murray (East Petersburg, Pa.) directed the
offense with 46 assists and Holt and senior libero Ryan Walthall
(Irvine, Calif.) each recorded four digs in the win.
The Nittany Lions racked up nine service aces to the Buckeyes'
eight, led by Holt with three and two each from Gutor and sophomore
Ryan Sweitzer (Lancaster, Pa.) while Murray and freshman middle
hitter Max Lipsitz (Williamsville, N.Y.) each provided one.
Penn State outblocked Ohio State, 9.0 to 7.0, led by Gutor and Holt
with four stuffs apiece and Anderson and Lipsitz with three each.
Robert Klein led the Buckeyes with 17 kills as Brett Versen chipped
in 10 and Sam Stevens added nine. Daniel Mathews dished out 49
assists and led the squad with five digs and four blocks.
The Nittany Lions open their season on Friday, Jan. 12 at Ball
State and Penn State's home opener is Thursday, Feb. 1 against Ohio
State at 7:00 p.m. at Rec Hall.
