Penn State Men's Volleyball Downs George
Mason, 3-1
Nittany Lions close out EIVA schedule with a
perfect 12-0 record
FAIRFAX, Va., April 7, 2007 - The sixth-ranked Penn State
men's volleyball team downed George Mason in four games (32-30,
19-30, 30-25, 30-20) Saturday night in Fairfax, Va., to close out
the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) Tait
division regular season with a perfect 12-0, while also improving
to 19-6 for the year.
Sophomore opposite Matt Anderson (West Seneca, N.Y.) pounded 19
kills as freshman middle hitter Max Lipsitz (Williamsville, N.Y.)
tied his career-best with 15 kills on .619 hitting. Senior outside
hitter Alex Gutor (Kiev, Ukraine) posted 11 kills as sophomore
middle hitter Max Holt (Cincinnati, Ohio) provided 10 kills on .471
hitting.
Junior setter Luke Murray (East Petersburg, Pa.) dished out 51
assists and led the squad with a personal-best 10 digs for his
first career double-double. Gutor chipped in seven digs, senior
outside hitter Aaron Smith (Forest, Va.) recorded six digs to go
along with his six kills on nine errorless swings, and senior
libero Ryan Walthall (Irvine, Calif.) contributed five digs.
The Nittany Lions racked up eight service aces in the match, led by
Holt with three, two each from Smith and Gutor and one from
Anderson.
Lipsitz led the way with three blocks as Smith, Gutor, Holt and
Anderson all posted two stuffs in the contest.
William Price paced George Mason with 19 kills as Kyle Gramit
notched 17.
