Rutgers-Newark, 3-1
Pavlik records 300th career win as Lipsitz sets new career
high with 15 kills
NEWARK, N.J., March 23, 2007 - Penn State men's volleyball head
coach Mark Pavlik earned his 300th career win as his sixth-ranked
Nittany Lions defeated EIVA-foe Rutgers-Newark in four games
(28-30, 30-27, 30-27, 30-27) Friday night in Newark, N.J., for
their seventh league win and their 13th of the season.
Four Penn State players reached double-digit kills, led by senior
outside hitter Alex Gutor (Kiev, Ukraine) with 16. Freshman middle
hitter Max Lipsitz (Williamsville, N.Y.) pounded a career-high 15
kills on .700 hitting as sophomore middle hitter Max Holt
(Cincinnati, Ohio) tallied 14 kills on .600 hitting. Sophomore
opposite Matt Anderson (West Seneca, N.Y.) posted 10 kills while
senior outside hitter Aaron Smith (Forest, Va.) collected seven
put-aways.
Redshirt sophomore setter Travis Foltz (Westlake Village, Calif.)
directed the Penn State offense with 56 assists as Gutor led the
squad with seven digs and Smith added six as senior libero Ryan
Walthall (Irvine, Calif.) notched five. Holt led the squad with two
service aces. Penn State outblocked Rutgers-Newark, 13.0 to
10.5, led by Holt with eight as Gutor racked up a career-high-tying
seven stuffs. Holt has now recorded eight or more blocks in three
of his last four matches, and has nine contests with five or more
stuffs. Foltz and Lipsitz each chipped in three blocks, a
personal-best for Foltz.
Eric Honsberger led the Scarlet Raiders with 21 kills as Nate Stott
chipped in 15 kills and Clinton Haugan posted seven. Mark Hulse
dished out 47 assists and Derek Wolfe led the squad with a
match-high 12 digs. Haugan also topped the team blocking charts
with five stuffs as Hulse racked up five service aces.
The Nittany Lions overcame an early deficit to take the 14-13 lead
on an Anderson kill. But a Penn State service error coupled with
two Rutgers-Newark kills and a Scarlet Raider block forced a
Nittany Lion timeout at 17-14. Out of the break, the teams traded
points twice and a Penn State tripled block from Foltz, Gutor and
Lipsitz pulled the Lions to within two at 17-19. Another
Rutgers-Newark run, this one three points, put Penn State down
22-17 before an Anderson kill pulled the Lions to within four at
22-18. Penn State slowly chipped away at the hole, taking the 26-25
lead aided by an Anderson kill and a Scarlet Raider attack error.
Out of a Rutgers-Newark timeout, Penn State returned the favor with
an error to knot the game at 26-26 and the teams traded points
twice before a Rutgers-Newark ace from Hulse and a kill from
Kenneth Stumbaugh gave the Scarlet Raiders the game, 30-28.
Game two remained close throughout, with four Gutor kills in five
plays putting Penn State ahead 16-13. Two Rutgers-Newark kills from
Honsberger helped the Scarlet Raiders even the game at 18-18 and
kills from Holt and Gutor along with a double block from the two
gave the Nittany Lions the 22-19 advantage. A Holt kill made it
24-20 but again Rutgers-Newark remained within striking distance,
tying the game at 26-26 on another Honsberger kill and Penn State
attack error. Out of a Nittany Lion timeout, kills from Lipsitz and
Holt helped put Penn State back on top, 28-26 before a Smith kill
and Anderson ace ended the game, 30-27. Again the teams
stayed close in the third game, with a Holt kill and solo block and
a double block from Holt and Gutor giving the Nittany Lions the
15-12 lead. Penn State slowly built the lead up, with a Smith kill
giving the Nittany Lions the 22-15 lead. An Anderson kill made it
25-18 and the teams traded points four times before a
Rutgers-Newark kill, block and ace pulled the Scarlet Raiders to
within three at 28-25. A Rutgers-Newark service error halted the
run and following another Scarlet Raider service error, an Anderson
kill and Rutgers-Newark service miscue gave Penn State the game,
30-27.
Penn State jumped out to the early 10-1 lead to start the fourth
game behind two Lipsitz kills and consecutive Holt aces. But
Rutgers-Newark mounted a massive run of its own, scoring 15 of the
next 19 points, including three consecutive service aces, to take
the 16-14 lead. Following a service error to end the run, redshirt
sophomore Jay Stauffer (Columbia, Pa.) sparked Penn State into
scoring the next five points, with four coming on blocks, to put
the Nittany Lions up 20-16. Penn State maintained the slight lead,
going ahead 25-22 on a Gutor kill and 27-24 on a Holt put-away. The
squads traded kills the rest of the way out, with a Lipsitz kill
ending the game, 30-27.
