WEST HAVEN, CT - New Jersey Institute of Technology men's
volleyball team gained sole possession of first place in the
Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Hay Division
defeating University of New Haven 3-0 Monday night.
The Highlanders who secured a first-place finish tonight move up to
the higher power-rated EIVA Tait Division for 2008 which goes to
the 2007 EIVA Hay champion. NJIT will continue into postseason,
having clinched a spot in the Hay Division berth in the six-team
EIVA playoffs.
The Highlanders, who defeated New Haven, 3-0, on February 20 in
Newark, NJ upped their EIVA Hay record to 9-1. NJIT is 17-8
overall. New Haven, meanwhile, fell to 7-13 overall and 0-8 in the
EIVA Hay.
NJIT set the tone for the match with a dominant 30-11 win in game
one. New Haven drew closer in game three, but the Highlanders
completed the sweep, 30-11 and 30-25.
The Highlanders as a team were impressive with a .338 attack
percentage on 48 kills, 15 errors and 85 attempts. Leonardo Paludo,
who didn't play in the last two matches for the Highlanders, led
NJIT with a match-best 10 kills. He had 10 kills and 2 errors in 18
attempts for a hitting percentage of .444.
Junior middle Greg Wagner, who rarely has an attack error connected
for 9 kills on 9 attempts for a 1.000 hitting percentage. Robert
Thomas and Amobi Armstrong both posted 8 kills on 14 attempts in
the victory.
Freshman Daniel Paslawsky notched five kills on nine swings and
just two errors. Rodrigo Correa and Mike Nonnenmann split time at
the setting position; Correa posted 23 assists in two games, while
Nonnenmann collected 10 assists to go along with three kills.
On the defensive end, Paludo posted a match-high eight digs while
Wagner and Douglas Thorn shared honors with five digs apiece.
Wagner tagged a game-high four blocks while Correa followed behind
with three.
For New Haven, Kevin Gonclaves notched a team-high 14 assists, six
kills and two service aces in the loss.
