Fairfax, Va. (August 7, 2006)-- George Mason Associate Athletic Director Ron Shayka has been named Chair of the NCAA Men's Volleyball Committee. He is entering his third year a four-year term as part of the committee, which has a hand in choosing the field for the NCAA Men's Volleyball Championship.
Shayka is one of three members of the Men's Volleyball Committee, the lone representative from the East Region. He assists with the selection of the at-large Final Four team as well as creation of the Final Four bracket. The committee is instrumental in monitoring the rules for the game and overall development of the sport. In addition, the committee helps select the officials for the championship and aid in developing an annual agenda.
A former men's volleyball coach at Mason, Shayka has a long history of involvement with men's volleyball. He coached the Patriots for more than seven seasons and he has served on several Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) committees. He is currently in his fourth year as the vice president of the EIVA.
A former player at Penn State University ('81), Shayka came to Mason as an assistant coach in 1982. He remained in that position under Wayne Stalick, who founded the program in 1975, until 1986, when he took over as head coach while Stalick was on a year-long sabbatical. He led the squad to a 27-5 mark. When Stalick returned, Shayka left to work at Georgetown University, where he stayed for three years.
Stalick departed as coach after the 1990 season and Shayka returned, this time coaching six years and compiling a 102-88 record. He retired from coaching after the 1996 season, becoming an assistant athletic director. He came out of retirement to coach the 1998 team following the tragic mid-season death of then-coach Uvaldo Acosta. In eight trips to the EIVA Tournament, Shayka led the Patriots to the championship match three times, and a top three finish five times
