Publicity
NEWARK, N.J. – Mark Mentone, coordinator of sports
information services at New Jersey Institute of Technology of the
Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, was one of 28 athletic
media relations professionals to be named a regional honoree of the
2004-05 American Volleyball Coaches Association Grant Burger Media
Award program, the AVCA announced today.
Mentone was the Women’s Division II Northeast Regional
receipient of the Burger Award, presented for excellence in
publicizing the sport of college volleyball. He is also the
part-time information director for the CACC, and works directly
with the AVCA’s media relations staff in both roles.
The NJIT women’s volleyball team posted a 13-victory
improvement from the previous season in 2004, and reached the
semifinals of the CACC Tournament. The Highlanders claimed their
first AVCA National Player of the Week and their first First Team
All-CACC selection (freshman Angie Casado). Casado was also voted
the inaugural CACC Newcomer of the Year. The CACC, meanwhile, had a
team (Wilmington (Del.) College) selected for the NCAA Northeast
Regional for the first time.
Mentone, 31, has been a media relations professional for nine
years, including the last five at NJIT. He was the main media
contact for Southern Connecticut State University’s
back-to-back Division II national championships in men’s
soccer in 1998 and 1999. A native of Hamden, Conn., he resides in
Bloomfield, N.J.
